I was just informed (I'm 71) that I have Chitimacha blood in me. My family heritage goes back to France, but the last five generations were from the Houltanville, Madisonville, Houma areas. Other names in my family were Ruebion, Resnays, Serres and Ardeneau.

Very helpful, contacted a Christian friend at Cherokee N.C. who works on the Indian Mission, as chaplain. She led me to this site. Mr. Brockman will get with you later, he is not available at this time. So glad to find this site and he has a lot of research he wants to do. I don't even know the name of the family member he was told by an elderly aunt that he was part Choctaw. Thanks again. Very nice setup.

My mother is 1/4 Choctaw but grew up in Shreveport. We have never really researched into which band her grandfather belonged.

finally a website where I can locate the dates of Powwows in LA. My great- aunt informed us that we have some Indian heritage and I have always had an interest in the Native American culture. Thank you for this site.

Thank you so VERY much for establishing this marvelous website. Since first learning, 25 yrs ago, of my Chitimacha ancestry, I have found only a little about her people and their ways. Your site covers SO much more, including their history since the time of Bienville, etc. I was proud of the well researched manner in which you present your Web Site. May I add that, from early girlhood, I had a great affinity for all things "Indian"; I wished so strongly I were one, it was almost an ache. I was so thrilled when I discovered through family research that I was descended from the Chitimacha. Among your guests' letters, I finally found that my ancestors, Jacques Guedon dit Nantois and his Chitimacha wife, Marie Anne Therese de la Grande Terre, were married at Los Adais in 1719. What a great help to me. Do you have an e-mail address for Mr. Lawson, the poster of that informative letter to you? Though we are merely distant cousins, I would love to contact him. Truly -- T hank you again!

Found your site while surfing for info on the Chitimachas. Nicely done. Am coming to Franklin to teach a class on basic Indian law. I'm a tribal attorney for the Umatillas in Oregon. Born in New Orleans to a family that hid its Choctaw ancestory. Coming down there to teach Indian law after 17 years away feels a bit like coming full circle. Thanks for the info

I do enjoy your site, they're my friends.  I am one of the Mugulasha-Choctaws here in Mississippi.  As I am almost the last I want to look for those in the old tribes from ancient Mississippi.  I want to find the following peoples: Natchez, Houma, Ogoulapissas, Bayougoulas, Mobilas, and Pascaogoulas.  Any and all info on the ancient Mississippi tribes will be greatly appreciated by me.  I do respect your people.  God bless and keep you on the red road.

Has anyone heard this name???  I'm not status, but incidently, I live on a reserve in Ojibwa First Nation, Mississauga tribe.  If anyone could help me my e-mail is: farmer2@nexicom. net   Thank you, Cory

I found your site very informative and helpful. I live in Mashpee, home of the Wampanoag tribe and was trying for 3 hours on the federal gov. web sites to find out how a tribe goes about seeking federal recognition (for a term paper), every gov. site was unavailable, or under construction or no longer existed. if it weren't for your site I still wouldn't know!

Marie Latour - Hartford, New York - USA - Friday, February 8, 2002

I have been searching for my husbands father and I believe your page may have some relatives if not himself. He never met his father and we were told he had either Choctaw or Cherokee on his birth certificate by his mother (late). We only have one black and white photo that looks just like Bobby, my husband. We were told his name was William Joseph Billiot and he was a shrimper in Gulfport. His mother lived in Houma and his best friend was called Potato Chip. Bobby (born in 1957)was given up for adoption and could be why his father never attempted again to find him but his mother retrieved him a short time later. Even if we do not find him, I appreciate you pages of a strong heritage I can finally give my children on my husbands side.

Chief Randy, I would like to congratulate you on having such an informative and interesting web site.  I have seen you many times at the Louisiana Indian Education Advocacy Committee (LIEAC) meetings but have never talked with you.  I come from the Four Winds Tribe, Louisiana Cherokee Confederacy.  I can see that you as other Louisiana tribes have had your share of ups and downs, and I applaud you and your tribe on staying together and connected.  I may need some help or advice in the future and would hope that you will offer your assistance.  Again, this site is one to be proud of and thanks to all who made it possible.  This site was very interesting because for my whole life we were told that our tribe was Houma.  Now the truth is out which may help us to become federally recognized.

I really enjoy reading about history in the local surrounding areas of South Mississippi and Louisiana. I was really in shock when I read about the public education denied the local tribes all the way into the early 60's! That is really tragic! Keep up the fight for your rights ! You have a great and informative website !

Being born in Choctaw, Louisiana I often wondered about the Indians that lived in the Cypress Swamps ages ago.  I recall as a boy hearing the Old Folks referring to the Indians as Savages.  I would like to learn more of the place where I was born. If anyone can help, please email me.  Your site is terrific.

Greetings from a New Zealand spring.  I love your site.  I spend hours searching for clues as to my gg grandfather, Henry Hicks' s origins.  All in vain I'm afraid. But your site is more excellently put together than most and I'm sure of interest to those even without Native American heritage.  I have no clues other than his diaries which make no mention of family, location, but the only family reference to our heritage is Choctaw.  Sadly all the old ones have gone and it will probably forever remain a mystery.  Cheers, and prosper,  Helen Josette

The site is just great and all the info anyone needs is there.  I had the pleasure of introducing Joelle Rostkowski from Paris, France to Marlene Foret and Audrey Westerman.  Joelle is an historian and a writer, the last book she wrote is Le Renuveau Indien Aux Etata-Unis is about American Indians.  She came to Houma to seek out French speaking Indians and of course found them.  She enjoyed being in Houma and meeting Marlene, Audrey and my cousin Father Rock Naquin.

Randy, I was able to meet you personally when you went to a school in Point Au Chene where my sister Hazel Naquin Hearty teaches.  I enjoyed your talk and was able to speak to you personally afterwards.  I appreciate the work you are doing in trying to get recognition for our tribe.  This recognition is long overdue.  May God bless you and guide you in your endeavors.

I found the sight to be quite informational and enlightening.  As a member of another American minority group, I have extensive personal experience about the problems of enjoying one's own culture, while allowing oneself to acculturate into the majority culture sufficiently to reap the benefits of living in America.   Perusing your sight reminded me that I have basically ignored other minority cultures in America, especially the original indigenous peoples of the North American continent.  Thanks for developing the sight and helping not only your own minority group, but other groups as well to reach out and truly discover another part of the roots of America.

Nice website!  My family once lived in a small Choctaw band just outside New Orleans before New Orleans was a city and lost their land to be moved to the Indian Territory (Oklahoma) back in the early 1800's as told by my grandfather and the grandfathers before him. Our people are part Black and part Indian and I would like to get to know more people of this area of ours and would like to come together someday and make a stand and be proud of our Native American heritage again.  I told this to the Choctaw Nation in Oklahoma and one of the councel members renamed me "Chief Redhawk" of the Louisiana Choctaws.  Well that is to much for me so I just call myself acting chief.  One day we will all come together again and let the U.S. Government know that we Louisiana Choctaws are still alive and well.

I would like to thank you for such a wonderful site. I am desperately looking for my lineage. I was adopted but have met my biological family from Louisiana. We are obviously of Native background, however my Grandfather has dementia and cannot tell me what tribe. The rest of the family has not been of a great help. One relative said that Ada Wood was Native from La., which would be my great-grandmother. If you have any suggestions on how to find my roots, it would be greatly appreciated! Thank you, searching, April

I just learned from Audrey Westerman that my people are of BCCM.  I had been told that they were from Philadelphia, Mississippi and were Choctaw. Audrey was kind enough to print me out a chart that goes back to Jacques Billiot and Rosalie Courteau.  My mother is Catherine Creppel born May 1,1924 and I was born 9-23-46 on Bayou Barataria in Jefferson Parish.I really want to know my heritage both for myself and my sons . It seems the things I had been told all my life were in error. Anything you can tell me will be greatly appreciated.  Sincerely, Sue

I enjoyed viewing your site.  And I know that we are probably related.  My father was Sidney Noel Verdin, his father, Joachim Bartholemy Verdin, his father, Joseph Verdin, his father was Ursin Verdin (I believe) and his father was Alexandre Verdun.  My large family mostly still lives in Louisiana.  I moved away 20 years ago, but do plan to return for good someday.  Meanwhile, I visit family often.  Keep up the good work.

My name is Joe Lirette, the son of Theresa Cecile Duplantis who was the daughter of Octave Duplantis and Lorenza Billiot who was my grandmother. Who said she was full blooded Indian of the Chitimacha tribe.  On my birth certificate in the race block says Indian and is checked off.   I now have a computer and was able to come to the site.  I looked at your calendar at the community meeting on August the fourth, can anyone attend? Any information about the Chitimacha Indian Tribe other than what is on the site such as fairs, festivals, and meetings and newsletters etc. would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you very much.  Joe

Randy, Great Site.  Beautiful Indian People.  I enjoyed it very much!  I am sorry that we could not get you all State Recognition.  We tried very hard.  My regret and disappointment is when Indian Groups oppose each other instead of working together to advance the cause of all of our people.  You are a great leader of your people and I want to commend you on the excellent work that you are doing for BCCM.  Of all people, I have been privileged to know first hand how hard you work and even though there have been disappointments you have always been a gentlemen.  Those are the same characteristics that made our Chiefs of yesteryear the great leaders that they were.  I look forward as Director of Indian Affairs to maintaining our friendship for years to come.  Best wishes to all your people and the Pointe au Chien.
Joey Strickland, Executive Director, Governor's office of Indian Affairs

My ancestor was Marie Theresa who married Jacques Guedon at Los Adias in 1719.  She died in 1740 and her church death record list her as a Chitimacha Indian. (Natchitoches Church Records) Does any information exist on her in tribal records?
John R. Lawson - Alexandria, Louisiana - USA - Sunday, July 8, 2001

Thanks John R Lawson.  Her name is given as Marie Therese de la grande terra, which would place her as being from the western band of Chitimacha, around Grand Lake.  A number of records with her named appear in Elizabeth S. Mills' book "Natchitoches 1728-1803" including baptisms and marriages of her three daughters and her death record.  Audrey Westerman

I have enjoyed looking at the site. It is wonderful.

Really enjoyed the website. All my family, on the Terrebonne side, is from Golden Meadow. Was hoping to find information on the Terrebonne name and if we are intertwined with Indian heritage. My mother's maiden name is Fountain and I found on her side Choctaw heritage. If you have any information on the Terrebonne name and if we are part of local Indian heritage, please contact me. Thank you, Nolan A. Terrebonne III.

I have never heard of the Biloxi-Chitimacha-Choctaws before, I heard of a tribe called the Houmas down in southeast Louisiana. What kind of relationship yall have with them.  And what is your update on Recognition?
Darren Roberts - Tulsa, Oklahoma - USA - Thursday, May 24, 2001

Great questions.  We have been around for a long time with a proven history and ancestry.  Our petition for recognition is on active status with the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA).  The Houmas were initially denied federal recognition because they could not prove their Houma ancestral claim.  It is my understanding they are not Houmas and their claim is yet to be proven.  After thorough and extensive genealogical and historical research we have determined that there are absolutely no Houma ancestors in our Indian people in Lafourche and Terrebonne parishes, the BIA has concluded the same.  As for a relationship with the Houmas, there is none.  Chief Randy Verdun

What a beautiful gift to your people. Thank you for sharing it with me.

This site is wonderful.  As a child and teenager, I have been to the Island many times.  Two of my sisters married Naquins from Point-a-Chenes and my grandparents were from Bourg, with many  relatives from down the bayou.  I definitely am going to get back to the Island the next time I go home.  I miss all of the wonderful things that make down the bayou special.  You all have done a fantastic job researching and posting all about where life began in a very special place and fast disappearing culture.  Keep up the good work!

This site is very much appreciated.  It's great!!  It's unfortunate that many people are not aware of the struggles of the natives from the lower bayou Indian communities in Louisiana.  This sight provides insight and offers information that is much needed. Keep up the good work!!!
